The Extra Bit

‘The Extra Bit’ Report aims to shed light upon the lack of individual empowerment afforded to mental health consumers. It is crucial that consumers are encouraged to adopt an active role in their own treatment.

Although many health professionals prefer consumers to remain passive during the decision-making process, it is nothing short of neglect to disregard the rights and opinions of the individual receiving treatment. Efficacious participation has been found to improve overall health outcomes, while also creating a more cooperative, consumer-friendly system that would enable the health budget to be allocated more efficiently.

This Report demonstrates the need for considering both professional and consumer perspectives in regards to treatment. It also presents a detailed discussion of the diverse ways in which mental health consumers may be effectively incorporated as contributory participants in the general health system.
