ICAC Inquiry into Corruption in NSW Prisons
(ICAC - Independent Commission into Corruption)

Overview:
Justice Action regularly receives reports and allegations of miscarriages of justice; from within the prison walls and from community collisions with policing services. We are not primarily a casework service provider.

To the extent possible, we research and investigate cases in order to confirm the circumstances and make an appropriate determination as to how best to assist the victim and rectify the miscarriage.

Background information

As appropriate, individual cases are referred to allied service providers:

  • Legal Aid or community legal centres
  • Victim or prisoner support organisations
  • Solicitors, barristers or Queens Council
  • Private investigators and other paralegal service providers

For those cases which are indicative of systemic abuse or corruption, where resolution and visibility will benefit the majority of prisoners or the broader community, or where the victim remains under threat of immediate harm or death or continuing abuse, Justice Action will:

  • File formal complaints with appropriate statutory bodies
  • Intervene and lobby government ministries and commissions
  • Initiate media releases and campaigns to publicise and expose
  • Initiate public education campaigns, workshops & conferences
  • Propose & organise actions of civil disobedience when necessary
